Holiday itinerary

Day 1: UK / Mexico

Depart the UK on an overnight flight, landing in Mexico City the next day.

Days 2-3: Mexico City

Arrive and transfer to your hotel for a three-night stay. Founded by the Aztecs, Mexico City is a mix of ancient ruins, colonial buildings and modern high-rises. A tour on day two takes in the Zocalo, the National Palace in Chapultepec Park and the Anthropological Museum, one of the finest on the continent.

Day 4: Teotihuacan

A day trip from the capital visits the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of Latin America's most revered religious shrines, and the pyramids, palaces and temples of Teotihuacan, thought to have been settled around 100 BC and for a while the biggest city in the world.

Days 5-6: Oaxaca

Fly to Oaxaca, once the centre of the Mixtec & Zapotec civilizations and one of Mexico’s most beautiful colonial cities. Located 300 miles south of Mexico City and some 5,000 feet above sea level, the city of Oaxaca dates back to 1529, but the region as a whole has been inhabited since prehistoric times.You'll spend two nights here, leaving you plenty of time to enjoy tours of the fascinating archaeological sites of Mitla and Monte Alban, the latter of which was capital of the Zapotec civilisation from 500 B.C. to 800 A.D and enjoys a spectacular mountaintop setting.

Days 7-8: San Cristóbal de Las Casas

Fly to Tuxtla via Mexico City and take a cruise along the Grijalva River to Sumidero Canyon. Explore the colonial city of San Cristóbal de las Casas and visit the Indian villages of Zinacantan and San Juan Chamula.

Day 9: Palenque

Drive from the cool highlands via the waterfalls of Agua Azul to the tropical lowlands, where you'll find your hotel, conveniently close to the entrance to Palenque, an ancient Mayan site surrounded by dense jungle and circling mountains.

Day 10: Campeche

Take a tour of Palenque, the burial site of King Pakal, before heading to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Campeche via the scenic Sabancuy coast.

Day 11: Uxmal

Take a morning tour of romantic Campeche, a classic example of Spanish colonial architecture. On the way to Uxmal you'll also visit Edzná, a Mayan site with a remarkable pyramid-style temple.

Day 12: Mérida

Enjoy a full-day tour of Uxmal, rated by many archaeologists as the finest Mayan city ever built. Also visit the Palace of Masks at Kabah, a large façade decorated with hundreds of stone masks, before reaching colonial Mérida.

Day 13: Chichén Itzá

Enjoy a full day tour of Chichén Itzá, the most famous of the ancient Mayan cities and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

Day 14: Depart Mexico

Transfer to Cancún for your overnight flight back to the UK.

Day 15: Arrive UK

Arrive back in the UK after your overnight flight and continue your journey home.
