Run by: The Great Projects
Reference number: Maldives Turtle Conservation Project
As a volunteer on this distinguished marine conservation project, you will not only get to experience true island life in one of the most stunning locations on earth, but you will get to work towards the conservation of five species of marine turtle (Hawksbill, Green, Leatherback, Loggerhead and Olive Ridley) within the marine centre.
Whilst at the marine centre, you will be working on a range of projects including; the turtle 'head-starting' programme, planning and implementing awareness programmes for the local community and the schools within it, reef monitoring and extending the coral garden which has been laid around the island of Naifaru – where the project is based. Additionally, during the calm season (November to April), there is the potential opportunity to contribute to manta ray monitoring efforts.
On your project start date, after your 3/4 hour speedboat journey, you and the rest of the group will arrive at the project site and you will begin your turtle adventure. After settling in and meeting the staff who you will be assisting during your stay at the project site, you will then commence your volunteering programme.
Day 2 - 14
For the next two weeks you will be fully immersed in the project, taking part in the activities (all of which can be found in the activities tab) and helping the project site run smoothly to ensure the turtles are healthy and as fit as possible to increase their chances of a safe release back into the sea.
Depending on your departure time you may be able to have a lie in or explore the beaches one last time before you are transferred back to Male airport via speedboat to begin your journey home/onward travels.
