Lauded as one of the world’s more enlightened countries Costa Rica has an enviable reputation for protecting its ecosystems. As one of the most biodiverse countries on earth it has much to protect. Perhaps most famous of its treasures are the beaches at Tortuguero National Park. The name means Turtle Hunter in Spanish but the days of hunting are long over. The four main species to nest hear are hawksbill, loggerhead, green and leatherback. The sight of turtles nesting or hatching would leave few unmoved. From the Costa Rican capital San Jose, we head to Sarapiqui. Our private tour leads us€ross the famous Selva Verde hanging bridge, through some of the best-preserved rainforest of Costa Rica and into an ecosystem supporting many bird species. From there we travel to Tortuguero National Park by boat along the snaking canals. Here we may encounter turtles, monkeys, sloths and an array of fascinating birds such as the beautiful toucan. Next we reach Rancho Naturalista, one of the finest birding resorts in Central America. Our final two centres are located on the Pacific coast. We enjoy beautiful beaches and an amazing variety of wildlife from the crocodiles on Tarcoles River, to the macaws in Carara National Park. Costa Ricas wildlife is stunningly diverse and€cessible to all.
