Guided Walking Holidays - Romanian Highlights The chickens peck by the side of the road and a horse and cart trundles by. The view down the main street at Velea Zaganului is unchanged in a very long time. Only the telegraph poles remind you of modernity. Changing yet changeless, Romania offers a fascinating excursion to sights and experiences long disappeared from Western Europe.Experience this journey with Ramblers Walking Holidays. We start in Cluj, the former Hungarian capital of Transylvania, a well preserved city easily discovered on foot. We spend time here and visit the Turda Gorge, a spectacular sight. Next we stay at Sibiu, the former capital of German speaking Transylvania. It is a spectacularly fortified town, designed to repel Ottoman invaders, and well worth exploring. Outside the city well visit and explore the ancient country ways with a chance to meet and understand something of the ways of the shepherds who have maintained flocks in the local hills as long as recorded history. Then to Sighisoara. For some, this fortified old town will be the highlight of the trip. We stay near the town square so can enjoy the town at its best in the evenings. Although small it is beautifully preserved and ideally explored on foot. At Brasov we are in the Carpathian mountains. This elegant cultured baroque city is a destination in its own right. It is also a great place from which to explore the mountains and Dracula country. Well visit the castle at Bran, so closely associated with the legendary vampire Dracula. Although connections with the fictional vampire are tenuous at best, it is a fascinating building and should not be missed. Finally we reach Bucharest, a capital city recovering much of its poise and charm. Theres a visit to Ceausescus People Palace, the largest building in the world after the Pentagon. As personal vanity projects go it is astonishing and not without charm.
