These cruises cross the Arctic Circle, then continue far beyond. You can leave the world of the reindeer behind and enter that of the polar bear. Glaciers, sea cliffs and fjords this is nature at its northern wildest and most spectacular. And south of the Arctic Circle we also call in to ports where thrilling natural landscapes dominate. Our unique shore walks and excursions include: Klaksvik: A small town on the Faroe Islands surrounded by water and imposing humpback mountains. We travel by minibus a short distance, then hike up the mountain of Klakkur for tremendous views over the fjord, village, mountains and sea. Honningsvg: We venture into the hills behind this remote town, just short of North Cape, to experience true Arctic wilderness, normally spotting reindeer as we go. Kirkenes: In the far north of Norway, a stone’s throw from the Russian border. We walk into the wilderness world of lakes, scrubby forest and tundra behind the town with a local guide. Murmansk: Just a few miles from the border with Norway, this is Russia’s gateway port to the Barents Sea, built on mineral wealth, and the largest city in the Arctic Circle. Not attractive by any means, some might even say grim, but fascinating nonetheless. Harstad: Discover Norwegian hillsides and lakes from this small town on the west coast. Kristiansund: A town built on four islands. Our walk up the hill of Kvernberget with a local guide rewards us with views over sea, islands and mountains. Pyramiden: Possibly the wildest place you will ever visit, a remote outpost on the island of Svalbard, just 800 miles from the North Pole. We head southwest from the port with a local guide, crossing streams€ross open tundra to a lake. We hope to see reindeer and polar foxes as well as arctic flora. Longyearbyen: On the island of Svalbard, far to the north of mainland Norway, this is the area’s premier arctic adventure port. A local guide takes us€ross the Foxfonna glacier or to the top of Sukkertoppen mountain.
