The Andes stretch the length of South America dividing the continent completely. Remote and inaccessible, barren, arid yet full of life and culture they provide a unique experience. We will come€ross remains of ancient civilisations, ladies in bowler hats and colourful dresses, shamans, diverse birdlife, salt plains and clear bright night skies. We begin our journey on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in Perus capital, Lima. After a brief visit we fly€ross the mountains to Arequipa. At 2000m its an idea place to enjoy the mild climate whilst we€climatise. The city is full of history and beautiful architecture. Continuing by road we drive up over a 5000m pass to Puno and Lake Titicaca. This is the first of our altitude superlatives, the highest navigable lake in the world. Well take a boat trip out to Taquile Island on the huge lake surrounded by snow clad peaks. We drive around the lake into Bolivia, stopping to enjoy the ruins at Tiwanaku. Later we arrive in La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, standing in fascinating contrast to other cities in the Americas. We have time to explore its markets and less well known corners. Cable cars provide public transport and superb views. Next to Uyuni and the salt plains where we have the best views of the night sky. And on to Potosi and Cerro Rico, the mountain filled with the silver that funded the Spanish empire for 500 years. They still mine here now. We continue south through some spectacularly remote places to reach the border with Argentina. We stay at Tilcara and enjoy some great walking including the Pucara, the impressive pre-hispanic hill top fort. Finally we fly down to Buenos Aires to briefly see the city and enjoy a tango evening, before flying home.
