This itinerary combines some of the highlights of central and southern Chile. Spend a couple of days exploring historic Santiago taking in the culture and relaxing in the stylish bars before flying south to Chiloe Island. Here you can take in the verdant, rolling hills in the north and lush forest in the south, and with just a couple of towns, Ancud and Castro, this is a true wilderness. See the island by land, by boat, on horseback or by foot and incorporate biking, trekking and nature walks. Next, you return to the Chilean mainland and to the heart of the Lake District where you will see superb panoramic views of Lake Llanquihue and Osorno Volcano. Then experience the jewel of Patagonia, Torres del Paine National Park where you can discover a host of trails through the rivers, forests and dazzling glaciers. Finally head for Punta Arenas for your flight to Santiago and enjoy your final night in the Chilean capital.

Day 1 Overnight flight to Santiago from London or regional departure point.

Day 2 Settle into the Lastarria neighbourhood of this modern city overlooked by the majestic snow capped Andes Mountains. Your boutique hotel is a wonderful base from which to explore nearby or further afield by Metro. If you wish to relax after the long flight enjoy afternoon tea at the hotel or visit one of the nearby cafes, watching the world go by.

Day 3 Half day private city tour through the main streets of the historic centre of Santiago. Visit the Plaza de Armas where you will visit the Cathedral, Natural History Museum and view the historic building of the Central Post Office. One of the highlights of the trip is the Parque Forestal where, on a clear day, take in the magnificent city views. After your city exploration end in bohemian Barrio Bellavista where you will find many trendy restaurants and bars for a hearty lunch or refreshing local drink.

Day 4 Take the short flight south to Chiloe Island, a unique island 180km long and 50km wide. Lush, undulating hills in the north and dense forest in the south and just a couple of towns, Ancud and Castro, make this a true wilderness just waiting to be explored. Base yourself at the small and personal 12 room Tierra Chiloe to immerse yourself in the cultural identity of the island.

Day 5 Explore the island with the specialised excursions offered by the hotel which are included with your stay. Outings are either on land, by boat, on horseback or on foot and incorporate biking, trekking and nature observation. Tierra Chiloe has its own boat named Williche for use during outings on the archipelago’s channels and fjords.

Day 6

Day 7 Return to the Chilean mainland via a short flight to Puerto Montt in the heart of the Lake District. Your base for the next 3 nights is the Hotel Patagonico which affords great views of Lake Llanquihue and Osorno volcano. A short walk takes you to the main square, Plaza de Armas, or visit the Iglesia del Sagrado Corazon, a colourful building from the early 20th century. With a host of well-maintained colonial architecture Puerto Varas has a distinct middle European feel.

Day 8 Free days to explore the region or participate in a host of activities. If you are feeling energetic climb the majestic Osorno Volcano, white water raft, kayak the local rapids or take a relaxing cruise around the lake. The hotel also has a spa where you can treat yourself to a massage or take a dip in the swimming pool.

Day 9

Day 10 A long travel day by flight to Punta Arenas followed by a 4-5 hour land transfer takes you the jewel of Patagonia, Torres del Paine National Park. The actual granite towers reach vertically about 2800m above the Patagonian steppe where you can discover a host of trails, rivers, nire forests and dazzling glaciers.
