Luang Prabang - Champasak - Siem Reap - Phnom Penh
If Vietnam is the colourful and attention-seeking member of the Indochina triumverate, Laos and Cambodia are content to take a backseat, confident in their more subtle appeals. Though culturally distinct, the people here share a more relaxed approach to life, and the laid-back pace of existence imbues all travels here with a warmth and serenity felt in few other places.
Our itinerary combines our favourite destinations at an unhurried pace, to allow a proper appreciation of both the abundant physical attractions and also the unique atmosphere that make visits feel so special.
We start in Luang Prabang, an entire town designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of Southeast Asia's most magical destinations. The golden pagodas and palaces, robed monks and jungle setting provide an exotic start to the journey, which is continued at Champasak in the south of the country. Here the mightly Mekong fragments into a myriad tributaries that form the 4,000 Islands that give the region its name. Explore the Angkorian ruins at Wat Phou; go in search of the elusive Irrawaddy River dolphin and smell the coffee in the plantations of the Bolaven Plateau.
Fly on from here to Siem Reap, gateway to one of the world's few truly awe-inspiring sights, the jungle-clad temples of Angkor. Indulge your Indiana Jones fantasies exploring the crumbling remains of this once powerful empire, then take a final short flight to Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh. Once known as the Pearl of the Orient, the city is now regaining its former lustre after many years of turmoil and tragedy; providing both a poignant and uplifting conclusion to a fantastic journey.
