Grand Cambodia - 14 nights (Fully Tailored Journey)

From: £2495.00

Phnom Penh - Kratie - Kampong Thom - Siem Reap - Battambang - Koh Kong

At its peak, during the 12th century, the Khmer empire was amongst the greatest and most sophisticated in the world. With Angkor as its capital, the empire stretched across much of modern Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, and remnants of these halcyon days can still be found scattered throughout modern Indochina.

Our Grand Cambodia tour explores many of the familiar Angkorian temples: Angkor Wat, Ta Phrom and the Bayon, but also visits the lesser-known and arguably more atmospheric relics of the great Khmer era, at Koh Ker, Beng Mealea and Sambor Preh Kuk. More recent historial influence, in the form of the colonial French period can be seen in the architecture and ambience of Battambang and Phnom Penh, destinations which also bear the scars of the Khmer Rouge era.

The natural and rural delights of the country also feature highly on this itinerary. At Kratie in the north of Cambodia, where the Mekong River has created a fertile landscape of palm-lined islands and rice paddies, you can seek out the rare Irrawaddy River dolphin. Try a crunchy local delicacy, deep-fried tarantula, at Skuon, before heading to the vast Tonle Sap, lined with villages teetering on great stilts. Conclude the journey at the majestic Cardamon Mountains close to Cambodia's Thai border with a few days of relaxation at one of southeast Asia's most unusual resorts, the 4 Rivers floating Resort.
