Best of Cambodia - 8 nights (Fully Tailored Journey)

From: £995.00

Phnom Penh - Battambang - Siem Reap

Many visitors to the country see little of Cambodian life beyond the grand temples of Angkor, but for those with a little more time and an interest in getting a bit further beneath the surface we recommend getting out and experiencing Khmer culture first-hand on our Best of Cambodia itinerary.

During the colonial-era, before the dark days of the Khmer Rouge, Phnom Penh was known as the Pearl of the Orient. Located at the confluence of the mighty Mekong and the Tonle Sap rivers, Cambodia's capital is slowly regaining some of it's former lustre, and makes the ideal starting point for your journey. Get a taste of the highlights to come at the excellent National Museum, or learn more of the Khmer Rouge regime in the infamous Killing Fields.

Heading northwest from the city drive on through bucolic scenes of rural Cambodian life to the town of Battambang, stopping en route at Oudong, a former capital. The strategic location of Battambang, close to the Thai border and Tonle Sap Lake has proved critical throughout its history, and lingering influences of French and Thai rule are evident still. Explore the colonial architecture and outlying temples with your local guide, before continuing to your final destination, Siem Reap.

The ancient and spectacular temples of Angkor are one of Asia's true highlights, and three full days here enables you to take your time and to explore some of the many less-visited temples in addition to the well-known and popular options. Siem Reap itself provides a delightfully relaxing base for your adventures, making this a perfect conclusion to a fascinating insight into the country.
