Whilst a subtle mix of ingredients such as lemongrass, chilli, garlic and fish sauce is central to all Thai food, the cuisine does vary from region to region. As might be expected in the south, seafood is a key ingredient; northern food is influenced by Burmese cuisine and in Bangkok Chinese influenced noodle dishes are popular. All Thai food is known for its balance of the four fundamental taste sensations - sour, sweet, salty and bitter.
This holiday gives you the chance to sample and learn about the food on offer: taking you to sprawling markets, steaming street stands, huge food courts, fine restaurants and simple beach cafes.
You’ll start in bustling Bangkok where we include an extensive walking tour of the city and its famous street food stalls and markets, specially selected by knowledgeable local guides.€commodation will be at the beautiful Ariyasom Villa which has its own excellent restaurant serving exclusively vegetarian food using high quality ingredients. In Bangkok you will do a street food tour - guided by local food enthusiasts and taking you to places most tourists would never visit. It’s a fanastic way to meet the locals as well and a really different sort of a cty tour - all rolled into one.
Chiang Mai€commodation is at Tamarind Village, designed in the ’Lanna’ northern style and a peaceful oasis. It’s located in the heart of town with a cosy restaurant offering traditional Thai and fusion dishes. Once a week Chiang Mai’s famous street market with its food stands and craft shops takes place right outside the hotel.
In Chiang Mai you will participate in the traditional morning ceremony of alms giving to Chiang Mai’s monks, a central part of Chiang Mai’s food culture. We’ll also include a vist to the renowned ’Huan Soontaree Vechanont’. ‘Huan’ is northern Thai for ‘house’ and Soontaree Vechanont is a famous folk singer who runs this restaurant and performs traditional songs most evenings. The food is famous amongst Thai people for its authentic style and this is one of the best places to sample true northern food, culture and hospitality. It will mostly be Thai people here - this is not a tourist restaurant and so the chillie is not tempered down for western palletes! You’ll also take part in a famous cooking class focusing on classic northern cuisine (which is a very distinct ).
The holiday ends in the south-west at Koh Lanta with€commodation on the beach. Koh Lanta is an island with a laid-back atmosphere, a great base for sampling some of southern Thailand’s food. Southern Thailand’s cuisine has taken a lot of influence from Muslim populations that live in the area so pork dishes are less common and curries reminiscent of those found in nearby Malaysia feature widely. Here we include the Lanta Thai Cookery School where you can learn about the balance of the fresh ingredients central to Thai food and how to cook some Thai classics! You will get your own recipe book so that you can replicate some of the dishes you have sampled on your holiday when you get home.
