This tailor-made journey perfectly contrasts Norway’s rural delights with the rich variety of its towns and cities. Not only will you take in the cutting-edge design scene of Oslo and the UNESCO-listed heritage of second-city Bergen, but you’ll stop off at the quaint fjord-side village of Flåm, Trondheim’s medieval treasures and the colourful seaside town of Åndalsnes. It’s all linked by stays in central heritage properties – where you’ll enjoy included meals – and trips aboard three of Europe’s most scenic railways – Rauma, Flåm and the Bergen line. With a fjord boat trip mixed in, expect everything from mighty waterfalls and river valleys to high-mountain plateaus.
Days 1-2: UK/Bergen
Flying out to Norway’s second city, you’ll make your way to your hand-picked hotel – a contemporary favourite housed in charming redbrick. Here, you’ll be treated to delicious complimentary breakfasts and a privileged location, right next to Bergen’s historic sights. With two days to explore, you’ll wander between cobblestone streets, the UNESCO-listed Hanseatic timber wharf and the famous fish market – a meeting point for merchants and fishermen since the 13th century. The citywide views from the Fløyen funicular are a special highlight.
Day 3: Norway in a Nutshell tour to Flåm
Enjoy your first glimpse of Norway's spectacular fjords with a scenic train ride to the mountain station of Voss, followed by a bus journey via the hairpins of Stalheimskleiva en route to Gudvangen. It's then time to take to the waters on a cruise along the UNESCO-listed Naeroyfjord to Flåm. Tonight, after an included three-course dinner at your fjord-side hotel, perhaps head to the next-door brew pub to sample its array of award-winning craft beers.
Days 4-5: The Flåm Railway to Oslo
Today is given over to the famous Flåm Railway. As the world’s steepest standard gauge track, this engineering marvel will see you wend between verdant cliffs and plunging waterfalls, before you connect onto the train to Oslo. Sweeping across a high plateau, you might be able to spy a giant glacier before forested valleys see you onto the Norwegian capital. Here, you’ll stay right in the centre in a 1930s Art Deco delight, enjoying complimentary light dinners and breakfasts. You’ll then have two days to explore Oslo, from its sculpture parks and Munch Museum to its ultra-contemporary Opera House and fantastic café scene. Its Viking long ship and ski-jump fjord views are further favourites.
Stay: Clarion Collection Hotel Folketeateret
Day 6: Åndalsnes
Today’s ultra-scenic journey brings you first to the small mountain town of Dombås and then along the Rauma Railway to Åndalsnes in the Romsdalen Valley. A real trip highlight, you’ll plunge between soaring cliffs, rushing rivers and glacial valleys dotted with waterfalls. Even your grand accommodation features mountain views, which can be explored on nearby hikes. Alternatively, Åndalsnes’s pretty beach is just a short stroll from the hotel, offering bracing fjord dips and gorgeous valley views.
Stay: Grand Hotel Bellevue
Days 7-8: Trondheim
Retracing your route to Dombås, you’ll be treated to a fresh perspective of the world-famous Rauma Railway, sweeping back through beautiful fjords and wild mountains. You’ll end in Trondheim, a city steeped in history as Norway’s Viking capital. Take in the Gothic severity of its iconic cathedral – the most northerly in Europe – and spend a lazy afternoon hopping between the cafés and restaurants hidden among the colourful warehouses that line the Nidelven River.
Day 9: Depart for UK
After a final breakfast, make your way to the airport for your flight home. Alternatively, for the ultimate Scandinavian rail journey, consider extending your trip with a journey into the Arctic Circle aboard the Polar Express.
