This weeklong itinerary sees you start and finish with the charms of cosmopolitan Copenhagen before exploring Ilulissat, a picturesque settlement characterised by its iceberg-peppered fjord surrounds, and its reputation as one of the best place to witness the ethereal Northern Lights in Greenland. It's Greenland’s third largest town, but home to just 4,500 people – and a similar number of sled dogs, ideally used to discover its dramatic fjords and towering icy masses. You'll also explore the Ilulissat Ice Fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to one of the world's most productive glaciers.

Day 1: Copenhagen
Fly to Copenhagen and explore the vibrant Danish capital. Trendy coffee shops abound, as well as winding canal walks, national museums, cosy rooftop bars and charming colourful houses framed by tiny sailing boats. Finish your day with some ultra-fresh seafood and for the adventurous, sample the archetypal Danish delicacy of pickled herring in one of the many harbourside restaurants.
Day 2: Ilulissat
After breakfast today, you'll take a connecting flight to Ilulissat and its icy fjords, decorated with infinite jagged icebergs. On arrival, you'll transfer to Hotel Arctic, your base for the next four nights. Snug rooms range from harbourside suites to cosy aluminium igloo cabins, glinting from the icy monoliths just moments away. You've got the rest of the day at leisure to explore – perhaps head to the charming fishing port, local church or simply stroll alongside the glacier-dotted fjord. And in the evening, you’ll enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel created from fresh seasonal produce, with seafood being particularly notable. But be sure to keep an eye on the sky – Ilulissat is perfectly situated on the aurora belt and the town is regularly treated to a dazzling Northern Lights display.
Days 3-5: Ilulissat
Spend the following days exploring the spectacular town and its surroundings. Perhaps head on a five-hour dogsledding tour or a cruise among the harbour’s ethereal icebergs, calved from a nearby glacier. You'll head to the spectacular scenes of the lulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the most productive glacier in the world. Witness house-sized chunks of icebergs calve off and plummet into the sea below – a surreal natural phenomenon, and wonderfully explored with wintery hikes or cruises. Take a guided walk to a former Norse settlement on the ice fjord and learn of the fascinating history of Greenland, or sail to the small Oqaatsut settlement, established by Dutch whalers in the 18th century. And in the evening, head on aurora cruises or simply look up to be treated – luck depending – to a magnificent display of reds and greens swirling among the stars.
