Holiday overview

Go back in time, and explore the Viking sites and fascinating museums that serve as a reminder of one the most significant era's in Denmark's history, the Viking period. You'll begin in Copenhagen before soaking up the culture of the country's most important Viking sites. Pass through a number of picturesque villages and admire some of Denmark's finest scenery as you make tour way across the island of Zealand.

Holiday itinerary

Day 1: Copenhagen

Fly to Copenhagen, Denmark's capital and transfer to your hotel, 71 Nyhavn and check in. The rest of the day is free to discover Copenhagen at your own pace, perhaps stroll to the popular tourist sites Amalienborg Palace, Kongens Nytorv and Stroget, and then enjoy dinner in the sublime Restaurant Pakhuskaelderen, the perfect prelude to a night at the neighbouring Royal Danish Playhouse or the Opera.

Day 2: Roskilde

After a filling breakfast, collect your hire car and drive to Roskilde, a picturesque town founded by the Vikings, overlooking Roskilde Fjord. A guided tour with a local expert is the best way to learn about the town's Viking past and key local landmarks, including the Rosklide Cathedral – in which the Viking king Harald Bluetooth is buried.

Stay: Hotel Sofryd at Roskilde Fjord

Day 3: Roskilde

We highly recommend spending your second day visiting the town's Viking Ship Museum – with a main display of five longboats discovered in the fjord in the 1960s on display as well as a boat yard where craftsmen and boat builders work using historical methods.

Stay: Hotel Sofryd at Roskilde Fjord

Day 4: Lejre

Drive the short distance to Lejre, an important stepping stone at the beginning of the Viking age, featuring in the story of Beowulf. Begin your day in Lejre at the museum, before making your way to a park and open-air museum, The Land of Legends. Here, history is brought to live with reconstructed villages from the Viking era, Stone and Iron Ages. There's also the chance to try your hand at weaving, pottery and other traditional crafts.

Stay: Kragerup Gods, Ruds Vedby

Day 5: Trelleborg & Lake Tissø

The next stop on your Viking journey is Trelleborg, a fortress dating back to 980, built by King Harald Bluetooth. Here, an experience like no other: meet 'real Vikings' and witness a glimpse of their daily life, tasting traditional Viking brew mjød and watch as they demonstrate their combat skills. Afterwards, perhaps visit nearby Lake Tissø, where a large Viking-era farm was uncovered in an archaeological dig.

Stay: Kragerup Gods, Ruds Vedby

Day 6: Kragerup Gods

Spend your last day as a true Viking. This final day is all about having fun, either at Kragerup Gods, where high-wire trails run through trees, or play a range of games traditional in Viking times at Gerlev Playground. Afterwards, drive back to Copenhagen and return your hire car.

Day 7: Departure

Return to the airport in time for your onward flight.
