10 Day Kingdom of Black Pharaohs Tour

This tour showcases all the major archaeological sites of North Sudan. The overnights are at the exclusive properties of Karima and Meroe. This arid and wild region of extraordinary archaeological interest, wonderful people and beautiful landscapes becomes accessible even to those reluctant to sacrifice their comfort. If you are looking for a longer trip it is possible to do a pre-tour of 3 days to the Third Cataract area with two overnights in simple but typical private Nubian houses, offering an excellent cultural experience.

Day 1 - Arrival at Khartoum

Day 2 - Visit to Wadi Muqaddam with its many acacia trees. On route visit chai houses, a type of Sudanese rest stop.

Day 3 - Visit Jebel Barkal archaeological sites, which are on the World Heritage list. Then on to the village of El Kurru where there is one of the necropolises of the ancient capital, Napata. Not far from here there is an interesting site of petrified wood.

Day 4 - Visit the market in Karima, then board a small motorboat for a pleasant cruise along the Nile to enjoy the beautiful sand stretches and cultivated islands along the river. Also visit the archaeological site of Nuri to see many pyramids including the great Taharqa.

Day 5 - Visit the animal market of Tengasi and then follow the Nile to the archaeological site of Old Dongola. Visit a Nubian house, where tea and coffee will be prepared by a Nubian family, as you consume your packed lunch.

Day 6 - Enter the Bayuda Desert, characterised by sharp black basalt mountains, most of them volcanic and typically cone-shaped. After cross the Nile, then all of a sudden glance at more than 40 pyramids, which belong to the Royal Necropolis of Meroe. They are located on top of a hill, and some of them perfectly preserved. 

Day 7 - Today is about the pyramids. The Royal Necropolis of Meroe is covered by yellow sand dunes, and several pyramids stand out with their sharp shapes against the clear sky. Each one has its own funerary chapel with the walls fully decorated with bas-reliefs that show the King’s life and offers to the gods.

Day 8 - The site of Naga it is one of the two centres that developed during the Meroitic period, and id in a typical Saharan environment with rocks and sand. Here it is time to explore temples dedicated to Apedemak  and Amon. It is then on to Mussawarat, a settlement located in a beautiful valley crowned by hills. 

Day 9 - Back to Khartoum to visit the Archaeological Museum that contains two beautiful temples rescued by UNESCO and moved from the Lake Nasser area. Then head over to Omdurman, the old capital of Sudan, to see the Mahdi’s Tomb from outside and visit the interesting Khalifa’s House. It’s then on to the colourful souk of Omdurman. At sunset move to Khartoum North to attend the traditional Nuba Wrestling - only on Fridays, Sat and Wed. 

Day 10 - Home
