Fly into Mexico City to begin your eight-night food and culture odyssey. Your A&K driver will whisk you off to Stara Hamburgo, your boutique hotel for the next four nights. After a leisurely start, join A&K’s expert guide for a walking tour of the city which was once the centre of the Aztec empire. Visit the iconic Catedral Metropolitana famous for its gilded 18th-century Altar de los Reyes (Altar of the Kings) and 14 richly-decorated chapels which line the two sides of the building. Enjoy a photo-opportunity at the Palace of Fine Arts which has a stunning glass stage curtain made from Tiffany glass. After seeing 'The History of Mexico' mural at the National Palace you’ll have the afternoon to enjoy the city at your own pace. Today, you’ll visit Colonia Roma (known locally as La Roma) which is home to the city’s diverse culinary scene. As you wander through this cool neighbourhood, stop off to sample food from the mom ’n’ pop speciality food shops, ethnic eateries and bakeries founded by Mexico’s celebrity chefs. On your fourth evening, experience Mexico’s most popular spectator sport, wrestling (known as Lucha Libre). Your guide will be on hand to explain the rules of this battle of good against evil. The spectacle includes gaudy masks (mascaras), spandex and colourful characters. Today you’ll head to TeotihuacÁn, Mesoamerica’s holy city dating back to 150BC which was once the biggest city in the western hemisphere. Learn more about its fascinating history from your expert guide. Explore the Avenue of the Dead and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. Relax in the air-conditioned car as you are driven the three-and-a-half hours to your next hotel in San Miguel de Allende. On day six, you learn more about the colonial-style city of San Miguel de Allende. Your guide will take you on a walking tour starting in El JardÍn plaza. During the day you’ll visit the pink landmark of Parroquia de San Miguel ArcÁngel and former monastery Bellas Artes school. Toast your day of discovery in the world’s smallest tequila bar located in the trendy DÔce 18 Concept House. Today, you’ll be learning to cook from the maestro at the SazÓn cooking school, starting with a visit to the local market to pick up your fresh ingredients. Back in the kitchen you’ll be taught how to make everything from salsa to tacos and tortillas. Enjoy your last full day in San Miguel de Allende by wandering the cobblestone streets and admiring its beautiful architecture. Why not view this UNESCO World Heritage Site by flying over it in a hot-air balloon or take your kids to the Museo del Juguete Popular Mexicano to see its exciting toy collection?
