Holiday overview

Once the favoured holiday retreat of ancient Rome’s rich and powerful, the Amalfi Coast offers picturesque getaways in a historic setting. You’ll be guided through baroque cathedrals, white marble Greek temples and the idyllic island of Capri as you visit sleepy coastal communities and the world-famous city of Naples. And, you’ll taste your way through it all with Campania cooking classes, limoncello samples and wine courses all in picturesque, rural locations that range from traditional farmhouses to seaside villages. Along the way, expert guides will bring the sights to life as you’ll tour – and often dine – with a small group no larger than 18.

Holiday itinerary

Day 1: UK/ Naples

Arriving in Naples at your leisure, you’ll have what’s left of the day to introduce yourself to the sights and tastes of one of Italy’s oldest and most artistic cities. Wander along wide, leafy boulevards or stop off at an artisanal pizzeria but whatever you do don’t forget to look up to outdoor friezes and sculpted, brightly coloured baroque ceilings. This evening, you’ll be introduced to your tour leader and fellow travellers over a welcome drink and pre-tour briefing.

Stay: Palazzo Turchini or similar (Superior)

Day 2: Naples/Pompeii/Paestum

Today, you’ll explore – on foot and by bus – the UNESCO-listed Old City of Naples accompanied by an expert local guide. It’s a veritable archaeological treasure trove of glorious palaces, imposing castles and ornate churches. The centrepiece of this morning’s tour is the Cappella Sansevero cathedral with the impossibly lifelike marble folds of the Veiled Christ. In the afternoon, you’ll head south to Pompeii – the site of the fated Roman city that was at once destroyed and preserved by the sheer power of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. On a guided tour, you’ll gain an insight into everyday Roman life and walk among the ruins of the basilica, forum and amphitheatre. From here, you’ll journey to your idyllically rustic accommodation near Paestum.

Stay: Hotel Il Granaio Dei Casabella or similar (Superior)

Meals: Breakfast and dinner included

Day 3: Paestum/Minori

After breakfast, at a nearby farm inn, you’ll learn the art of traditional Campania cooking using only locally sourced produce. Combine ingredients such as buffalo mozzarella, ricotta, fresh fruits and vegetables with goat and buffalo meat before sitting down as a group to enjoy your morning’s work. In the afternoon, you’ll visit the marble temples of Paestum – a World Heritage site off the beaten track. Set against a mountain backdrop, its ancient Greek temples – dating as far back as 600 BC – are amongst the best preserved in the world. You’ll then make your way to your home for the next four nights – the Minori Palace on the Amalfi Coast.

Stay: The Minori Palace (Superior)

Meals: Breakfast and lunch included

Day 4: Ravello/Amalfi/Positano

The thirteen village pearls that dot the Amalfi Coast are each unique in their character and rich history. However, they share one breathtaking setting. Starting in Ravello – a town famous for its spectacular views – you’ll visit the gardens that inspired Wagner’s Parsifal along with the villa whose ocean perch has hosted such great names as Winston Churchill and Virgina Woolf. After a limoncello tasting session you’ll then explore Amalfi’s clustered backstreets and historic houses that look out over the Tyrrhenian Sea and are set against the beautiful Cathedral of St Andrew. Your day will then conclude in Positano whose tailors have made this delightful fishing village famous in the fashion world for pezze – comfortable, light clothes that are the hallmarks of Moda Positano or ‘Positano Style’.

Stay: The Minori Palace (Superior)

Meals: Breakfast and dinner included

Day 5: Capri

Today you’ll board a ferry and set sail to Capri. Just off the Sorrento Peninsula, it’s been something of an island resort since the days of ancient Rome; Tiberius lived out his last ten years on Capri, building twelve villas whose ruins can still be seen today. Upon arrival you’ll ride through lemon groves on a funicular railway to the centre where boutique cafés and restaurants rub shoulders with a wide choice of exclusive shops. Later this afternoon you’ll return to Minori across the azure waters to spend the evening at leisure.

Stay: The Minori Palace (Superior)

Meals: Breakfast included

Day 6: Maiori/Cetara/Vietri sul Mare

Spend some more time on the Amalfi Coast, visiting coastal towns and studying archaeological evidence of Roman summer retreats. Sample the exemplary gastronomy of Minori and Maiori before making your way to Cetara, a picturesque Mediterranean fishing village where a handful of houses look up to its church’s spire and down to its small port. Then, the hand painted, brightly coloured ceramics of Vietri sul Mare await along with a sea dip or terrace drink back at the hotel. Your last full day in Italy will finish with a final, farewell dinner.

Stay: The Minori Palace (Superior)

Meals: Breakfast and dinner included

Day 7: Minori/Royal Palace of Caserta/Sant’Agata dei Goti/Naples/UK

Leaving the Amalfi Coast, you’ll drive to the Royal Palace of Caserta – one of the finest, and certainly the largest, examples of Italian baroque extravagance. As the last great building of the period, it features over 1,200 rooms over five floors, some of which you’ll visit on your tour. You’ll then swap grandeur for the rural ideal at Sant’Agata dei Goti; here, you’ll taste a range of Aglianico wines, produced from the black grapes grown in the Basilicata and Campania regions of Italy. After a traditional lunch at the farmhouse, your journey’s end will bring you back to Naples for your flight home.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch included
