Enjoy beautiful views with Ramblers Walking Holidays. On the leafy banks of the River Rhne, discover a city steeped in ancient lore and mystery. As you make your way through the narrow cobbled streets of Avignon, capture this sense of history and mystique. Spend a day following in the footsteps of Van Gogh walking from St Rmy to Alpilles or scale the heights of the Pont du Gard Aquaduct. Throughout, your constant companion is a countryside filled with wild herbs and flowers under the watchful of Mont Ventoux, Provences highest peak. Medieval Avignon is surrounded by the 800 year old ramparts that once protected the city. It has been regarded as one of Frances major artistic centres since the 14th century when the Popes court was here to escape political turmoil in Rome. The Gothic Popes Palace remains. Elsewhere the citys ramparts, towers and decorated churches are evidence of its prosperity during this time. To the south we visit Arles, the regions key Roman city with a well preserved amphitheatre. We can explore the city of Nmes and walk in its public gardens the first in France. We wander in attractive countryside with bright hues of wild flowers, presided over by Mont Ventoux. Well walk around St Rmyde- Provence, as well as visiting the town itself, and also visit the Pont du Gard, an amazing stone aqueduct 160ft above the River Gard. We can also dance on the remaining spans of the Pont dAvignon!
