Spend a night in a hotel made of ice – for fun! Sweden's Ice Hotel was the first, but there are other places where you can have a truly chilled stay
The various ice hotels are generally constructed in early winter, opening for business late December/January. Most close for the season in late March/April. This is a great time to be in the Arctic, with lots of snowy activities on offer, and a good chance of seeing the northern lights.
Some of the ice hotels offer solid year-round accommodation too.
Obviously the cold is the main concern. The Ice Hotel will lend you certain thick over-garments (check with your operator before booking) but pack plenty of layers. Underwear should be synthetic rather than cotton; merino wool is an ideal choice.
If you plan to try activities such as snowmobiling, make sure your travel insurance covers extreme pursuits. If you're an EU citizen, and if you're travelling to an EU ice hotel, pack your EHIC card.
