Great Wall of China

Great Wall of China travel tips

The Great Wall of China is 6,400km of historic fortification, and the perfect springboard to even greater China adventures

Great Wall of China advice

  • Stay on the Great Wall – in some areas you can stay overnight in one of the watchtowers or camp nearby.
Travel in China is generally cheaper the further west you go; if budget is an issue, explore the far western end of the Great Wall.
For a quick, cheap and tasty snack in China try jiaozi – meat dumplings.
Visit www.beijinghikers.com – this local group walks every Sunday in the Beijing area; anyone can join them, and they often head out to remote and otherwise inaccessible stretches of the Great Wall.
If you are exploring the sections of the Great Wall in Inner Mongolia, stay in a traditional yurt for an authentic steppes experience.

When to go to the Great Wall of China

Northern China is cold and windy in winter, and hot and humid in summer. The best times to visit the Great Wall of China are the )clement autumn months (September and October) and spring (April and May).

Avoid Chinese national holidays during the first weeks of May and October, as accommodation will be booked up and the transport network extremely busy. Prices are hiked at these times.

Great Wall of China health and safety

With such an enormous population, cold and flu viruses are common in China in the winter months. Wash your hands frequently and eat plenty of fruit and veg.

Be wary of scams, especially people trying to sell you so-called ‘antiques’. They’re invariably not.

Walk carefully on the Great Wall of China – the Wall can be crumbly and uneven, especially around Simatai and Huanghua. Wear sturdy shoes.

Drink purified water and make sure your food is well cooked.
