Trans-Siberian and Trans-Mongolian railway

Trans-Siberian and Trans-Mongolian railway travel tips

The Trans-Siberian Railway is the ultimate train journey: ride it for wild landscapes, Russian sight-seeing and drinking vodka with new friends

Trans-Siberian Railway advice

  • Bring your own metal mug so you can drink the water from the samovar (hot water urn). Consider also packing foodstuffs that you can make up with boiling water such as oats (to make porridge), Pot Noodles and cup-a-soups.
  • You can buy tickets for onward travel at stations along the Trans-Siberian route; in order to get the ticket you want you may have to book in advance. The easiest solution is to decide on your itinerary and get a tour operator to book the trip for you.
  • Buy food supplies from the babushkas at the train stations – much tastier than the rather dreary meals served on board the train. Look out for fresh fruit and goat’s cheese pancakes.
  • Take wet wipes – most trains have no showers, but rather a basic bathroom with a basin and toilet.
  • Pack games and books to pass the time. Cards and chess are good for interacting with other train passengers.
  • Develop a taste for vodka, and learn how the Russians drink it – generally in downed shots (rather than slowly sipped), and with various toasts between rounds.

When to ride the Trans-Siberian Railway

The ultimate time to take the Trans-Siberian train is in winter – the most ‘Russian’ of seasons, complete with fur coats, sleigh rides and chilled vodka. In sub-zero temperatures the barren expanses of Siberia look as you expect them to (but the train is well heated). Russian cities also often look best under a layer of snow.

The peak tourist season runs from May to September, when temperatures are considerably warmer. During the summer it can be hard to get a place on the popular Moscow-Beijing route without planning weeks in advance.

Trans-Siberian Railway health and safety

No specific vaccinations are required for travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway but check with your doctor before travelling.

Avoid tap water – stick to the boiled water provided in the samovars (tea urns) in each carriage.

On the Trans-Siberian trains, lock your compartment and keep your money on you at all times. You may want to wedge the door shut at night to prevent anyone breaking in.
