Honeymoons

Honeymoons recommendations

With this ring, I thee… whisk off to Peru, or Sri Lanka, or Mozambique. Here's our guide to cliché-free escapes for newly-weds

10 best alternative honeymoons

  1. Take a self-drive safari – the bush camps of Kenya and Tanzania are chock-a-block with honeymooners, but how much more romantic to be trundling past the giant dunes and big beasts of Namibia in a 4WD, with only each other for protection…
  2. Delve into the heart of Borneo – Sabah in Malaysian Borneo is a great indulge/explore destination: pristine beaches, world class reefs and swanky hotels along the coast; primary rainforest, orang-utan reserves and tough-but-trekkable Mt Kinabalu nearby
  3. Combine beach and bush in Mozambique – the Maldives and Mauritius may hog the wedding magazines, but you’ll find equally spellbinding Indian Ocean sands on Mozambique’s Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos, plus Swahili culture and top-tier game viewing on the East African mainland.
  4. Love in a cold climate, Antarctica – Travel experiences don’t come more personal and poignant than exploring the White Continent. Pick a small ship, cosy up in your cabin, and prepare to hug each other in wonderment.
  5. Go island-hopping, Croatia – By sail or ferry, there are more than enough quiet coves in the Adriatic to find your own romantic bolt-hole. The perfectly heart-shaped island of Galesnjak is an obligatory lovers’ pilgrimage.
  6. Explore serendipitous Sri Lanka – Wildlife, temples, trekking, beaches, sumptuous food: Sri Lanka really does have something for everyone. Choose from one of the historic hotels in Galle or Kandy, then go exploring with a driver-guide.
  7. Stargaze, Laikipia Plateau, Kenya – sleeping out under a star-speckled night sky is the stuff honeymoons are made of. The experience has been perfected at Loisaba Lodge in northern Kenya, where you can walk or ride to four-poster ‘star beds’ looking out over the surrounding kopje
