Family travel recommendations

Childhood is where wanderlust begins. Whether your first forays are to Margate or Mongolia, the discovery of life beyond your home town can fire a lifetime of adventures

Top 10 family adventures

With kids, a trip to the corner shop can be an adventure, but if you're looking for further inspiration, here are 10 ideas to try

  1. Camping – cheap, accessible, and utterly absorbing for children, even a weekend under canvas feels like a real break. Choose a site that allows campfires and spend whatever it takes on your mattress.
  2. Australia – the home of big, oddly shaped, fascinating things like Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Opera House – and kangaroos
  3. A motorhome adventure – transport, accommodation and playroom in one. Try it out close to home, then go for a border-crossing, trans-Europe educational odyssey, or a North American epic road trip. Family bonding on a grand scale.
  4. Safari – it’s like the zoo, but real. South Africa’s malaria-free Kruger National Park tops many lists, but Kenya’s Masai Mara and Namibia are great options too
  5. Mexico – take advantage of cheap flights to Cancun, find yourself an idyllic Caribbean beach, then explore the Mayan pyramids and appealingly bloodthirsty history of the Yucatán peninsula
  6. The Canary Islands – unbeatable for European winter sun and far wilder than you’re probably thinking: climb volcanoes, gaze at 1000-year-old dragon trees, go whale and dolphin watching
  7. Egypt – pyramids, mummies, hidden treasure – and some R&R on the Red Sea. Great for school-age Indiana Joneses, and thus more likely to be approved of by teachers if you absolutely had to nudge a day or two into term time…
  8. Lapland, Scandinavia – Santa’s grotto is how you sell it to the kids, but husky sledding, the northern lights and monstrous snowdrifts is what they’ll remember
  9. Italy – no country is more besotted by bambinos, and with a diet of pizza, pasta and gelato, your kids will return the love. For older kids, history comes to life in Rome, Florence and Venice
  10. The rainforest – yes, there are bugs and biters, but walking beneath a jungle canopy alive with birdsong is an experience they’ll never forget. Try Central America or the Caribbean for easy-access jungle: Costa Rica, Dominica, Grenada
