The world according to Sarah Kiernan

Mountain/Desert/Ocean/Jungle... which one are you?
Coastal mountains – a combined hit of ocean and altitude

What was your first great travel experience?
Travelling around South America aged 19 and standing at 4,500m in the heart of the Andes. In one direction was Chile and in the other Argentina; I couldn’t believe how vast the horizon could be, how blue the sky was and how utterly alone I felt.

What has been your favourite journey?
Vancouver to the Yukon in a wreck of a Ford. The road hugs the Sunshine coast, sandwiched between the Pacific and white-speckled mountains sprouting alongside. Within half-an-hour of leaving the city, skyscrapers turned into comforting log cabins and

What are your Top 5 places worldwide?
The Monashee Mountains, BC, Canada Golden Beach, Paros, Greece Purbeck peninsula, Dorset Belesta, Pyrenees, France Marine area, Anse Chastanet, St Lucia

Recommend a special place to stay
Mmmmm… your own tent – for me the best way to truly unwind is to focus on the simple stuff, and when I think of my favourite experiences they’ve all involved my tent wherever I was.

Which three items do you always pack?
Chewing gum Pain killers Thermal socks – my toes won’t survive the flight without them

Which passport stamp are you proudest of?
Uruguay, where I developed a mate addiction.

Which passport stamp would you most like to have?
Japan in all its glory: city madness, blossom-laden hills, deep snow, soothing hotsprings and lashings of pickled ginger with tasty sushi bites.

Where or what is your guilty travel pleasure?
The US: from beach to mountains in an afternoon, lakes, deserts, giant trees and free-flowing coffee.
