How far can you travel on £250? Also inside are  true trips of a lifetime: a 14-page guide to visiting Antarctica, and TV naturalist Mark Carwardine’s account of meeting mountain gorillas in Uganda.

Ocean - sailing on it, snorkelling in it, or lying by it.

What was your first great travel experience?
A road trip in 1954, at the age of 14, from Bordeaux to Venice - outbound via the French & Italian Rivieras and inbound via the Alps.

What has been your favourite journey?
Too difficult to answer. I have experienced so much from all my travels that I would not have wanted to miss any of those journeys, except the coach crash in Malaysia, that is.

What are your Top 5 places worldwide?
Laos, Antarctica, Costa Rica, South Georgia, India.

Recommend a special place to stay
The Lookout Inn, a small and remote lodge on the edge of the Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica.

Which three items do you always pack?
Camera, curiosity and an open mind.

Which passport stamp are you proudest of?
South Georgia

Which passport stamp would you most like to have?
Can we make that plural, please? Madagascar, Borneo, Australia, Papua, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Guyana, Botswana ......

Where or what is your guilty travel pleasure?
Johnnie Walker Red Label. Why, oh why, can't we buy in in the UK???
