An Early Morning Start by Jamie Furlong

Assam in the winter months is dry and dusty. Many of the photographs, especially early in the morning, feature this unique filter across the sky adding mystery and intrigue to the vistas.

I'm a sucker for a sunset or sunrise and this is a beauty - very atmospheric Jamie. We saw lots of smoggy mornings in Delhi in the winter months (combination of mist and smoke from all the open fires) but never a sky like this one.

Funny, we were just talking to another boat here in Cochin who have just returned from the Golden Triangle and were complaining about the smog in Jaisalmer. They said it was quite bad but the two visiting (grown-up) children got some great atmospheric shots thanks to all the wood being burnt by the locals trying to keep warm!

In Assam it's different though. It's dust. I'll be posting up some images of Majuli Island at some point and there is a great shot of a cattle herder, early in the morning, barely visible through the clouds of dust.

Didn't see this till Jamie showed me yesterday, but I remember the morning clearly. We were waiting for our elephants at the entrance to Kazaringa. Everyone stood around in near silence, wide-eyed and staring at the incredible colours unfolding in front of us. The dusty air filtered out the blues, bathing the world in red, orange and yellow.
