Travel C.V. Frederick

About me: Married to Ann since 1980. Main interest is travel. Really enjoy seeing different countries and customs. Have been to 87 countries, but only interested in seeing them properly, not interested in fleeting glimpses. Would ideally like to visit 100 countries, which would be about half the world's total. Over 370 flights have taken us alphabetically from Albania to Zambia, which means that among those we haven't been to are Afghanistan & Zimbabwe. I think we'll save those until things are a little safer. We've also not been to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Mexico or Western Canada & Alaska which is appalling really. Nothing against any of them, but we've always concentrated on the more foreign places so each holiday becomes a real experience.

The world according to Frederick

Mountain/Desert/Ocean/Jungle... which one are you?
Wildlife & history really. Variety is essential to keep travel exciting but of those listed, mountain would be my favourite.

What was your first great travel experience?
Couldn't afford to go abroad until I was 20 years of age. Davos in Switzerland was a lucky 1st choice. A few years later met my wife Ann who'd just come back from a big trip to the Soviet Union inc. Tajikistan (which I still haven't been to). We chose Jerusalem for our first joint holiday, and touring Israel & the West Bank from there. That was a great experience.

What has been your favourite journey?
In a balloon over the Serengeti during the wildebeest migration. There was only one balloon at that time.

What are your Top 5 places worldwide?
Countries. Ethiopia, Yemen, Burma (Myanmar), Madagascar, Chile (inc. Easter Island) Sites. Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat, Iguazu Falls, Pagan (Bagan), Galapagos Islands

Recommend a special place to stay
It has to be Lake Palace Hotel- Udaipur. Expensive, but we pushed the boat out (sorry -that's supposed to be a joke). Chan Chich in Belize is also wonderful.

Which three items do you always pack?
A good book, a camera and a notebook.

Which passport stamp are you proudest of?
Yemen, I think, because it's such a great country and so few people seem to have been. Deserts in the south and very green in the north. Also South Georgia & Antarctic Peninsula and yes - we did get the passports stamped. Both were amazing places. Greenland is also quite cool. Not the temperature though. The sun shone brightly every day we were there and I got my best suntan ever.

Which passport stamp would you most like to have?
Pakistan. We were booked to go on 15th September 2001 and had the visas and tickets. We were going straight to Peshawar and the Khyber Pass and later to the Karakorum, but 9/11 happened and it was all cancelled.

Where or what is your guilty travel pleasure?
Trying to see 100 countries in some depth. We're at 87 now + quite a few "nearly countries", equating to 172 places on the "Most Traveled Person" (US spelling) website. We do like to explore each of them properly, not just a fleeting visit and some of the larger countries would benefit from a revisit to see places like Vancouver, Alaska, Borobodur and Kamchatka. We even want to go back to India even though we've been 4 times. It's such a diverse nation.

Window or aisle?
Window. We both like to see the geography as we fly over.
