Last month (October 2008) I undertook a fundraising challenge aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway with the aim of raising £10,000 for my local hospice (Earl Mountbatten Hospice, Isle Of Wight, UK).
I was challenged to write at least 100 A5 pages during the trip - so about six pages of a travel diary each day. I did it easily during the 18-day trip, which saw me fly from Heathrow to Hong Kong, then onto Beijing, then take the train from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), spend a few days in a ger on the steppes with local families, catch the train to Irkutsk in eastern Siberia, spend a few days in an izba (traditional wooden house) on the shore of Lake Baikal, the world's deepest lake, then catch the train onwards to Moscow. From Moscow, I flew back to the UK because I was only allowed a maximum three weeks off of work (bah-humbug!) The train journey was around 5,000 miles.
My fundraising is still ongoing - I have already collected more than £3,000 for the hospice in memory of my colleague, Jeremy Price. I am currently giving talks, have been on the radio several times and hope to be able to publish my travel diary with a percentage of sales to the hospice.
