Cardiff & Llyn Brianne

How long were you there for?
Three very, very wet nights

What was the single highlight of your trip?
Finally drying the last of my clothing, equipment and car interior two days afterward... honestly, I was wetter than an otter's pocket

Any lowlights/cautionary tales?
To steal a line or two from that fella Milligan: There are holes in the sky where the rain gets in But they're ever so small (except in Wales), that's why the rain is thin

Any absolutely MUST see sights/activities?
The Llyn Brianne catchment... I imagine.... I spotted a lovely wood with bluebells about to burst ino bloom when I slipped over and it was just in front of my nose

Any absolutely DON'T see sights/activities?
Sun-bathing? We couldn't see any sights so hard to tell

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
Emulate Mr Jeremy Fisher....put on a mackintosh, and a pair of shiny galoshes

Any other comments?
But seriously.... before I incur the wrath of some Celtic god... Llandovery seemed OK, or at least the Castle Hotel was reasonably dry, had decent ales by Evan Evans, and some fabulous local produce....

Oh dear Dr G, you got properly soaked didn't you?

I had the best cheese on toast ever in Llandovery (in the Tudor Cafe, I think), it was magnificent. It was so good that it made up for not being allowed to visit the hamstery (some inexplicable place with lots of hamsters, for no real reason as far as I could tell). Lots of red kites round Llandovery too.

You should have gove down the road to the hostelries in Llanwrtyd Wells, better than Llandovery.  I used to work in one - the Neudd Arms, used to be a decent place!  Yes, that Welsh rain is very wet, spent lots of happy wet days working with horses there.

Oh dear, lovely Cardiff all washed out.

That's sad. It's a really nice city, if you can get around it without the wonderful Welsh weather. Galoshes definitely needed. Did you go out & about in Cardiff itself? Or just the countryside around?

This sounds a very Welsh experience - it's what keeps it so green and attractive in those rare spells when the sun bursts through.  This is not a prt of the country I know; one day perhaps.

S'mae butt, dim rain today, lle yn Llyn Brianne oeddech chi. Top man peint y cwrw brewed by Evan twice in Llandeilo.

For those of you that don't speak Wenglish - hi mate how's things, no rain today. Where in Llyn Brianne were you. Top man pint of beer, brewed by Evan Evans in Llandeilo.

Did you stop off at the RSPB reserve on the way to the Llyn, Twm Siôn Cati's cave is there, Twm was a robber and a bandit and supposedly used the cave. There are numerous tall tales of Twm's exploits, he's regarded as a folk hero.

Did you pop into the King's Head for a peint. The Black Ox drovers Bank origannly set up in the Black Ox Pub (hence it's name) before moving to the King’s Head inn later the Black Ox become part of Lloyds Bank.

EH you can't call it cheese on toast it's Welsh rabbit, mmm caws pobi a peint y cwrw.

    Duw Duw Talk Tidy Mun.

Och! Shíl mise go raibh an Bhreatnáis coúil leis an Ghaelige ach ní fheicim aon cosúileachta! (Arrah! I thought Welsh was supposed to be like Irish but I don't see any similarity!)

But I do see much, a lán, similarity with the rain. I was chatting to Alan thread t'otter day about  doing it in the rain. seems appropriate to copy it in here:

...Donegal comedians will often comment on how lucky we are at times; like when it only rained twice last week - once for three days and once for four days! Or the shock that poor auld Noah got all those years ago when he drifted past Errigal, Donegal's highest peak just peeking above the water, and seeing the last surviving Irishman sitting there contentedly smoking his pipe, his trousers rolled up to the knee. Noah rushed to the bow speechless, here was the first homo sapiens he had seen in five years atop The Flood; our local man pulls on the pipe, tips his hat and calls out :

"Hi Sir, soft day, thank God".......

    Hi All,

    Thanks for comments.

EH - Hamstery? Marvellous.... that might explain the abundance of kites then....

REgyptian Goddess - you do get around! Would have enjoyed some bar time banter - after drying out of course!

Elli - Was mostly restricted to theUniversity, so a rather nice do in the Glamorgan rooms on campus. Stayed at the Angel on Castle St, so scurried through the park in the mornings... Might have had a wee snifter in the Rummer too.

Kev - the RSPB site spans one of our river sites so yes, did venture in. I imagine it would be a fine place for pied flycatcher. Cheers for the extra local hero info - something to investigate next time.

Alan - yes, as an aquatic ecologist, I really should appreciate what the wet stuff does!

Ah, but the university is really quite 'liuvlee'. (Well, the older part of it is anyway.) I remember running around it at about 7 years old, when I got to (excitedly) accompany my father to work (he lectured there).

Castle St - did you get to go to the deli in Castle Arcade? If not - return! It's a treasure trove of local beer, cheese and all things tasty.

    Has everything dried out yet?

Yep, the RSPB reserve is pretty good for pied flycatchers and dippers and wagtails.

So how was the Angel. Have a butchers in The Goat Major next time you're in Cardiff, it has a local menu and some real ales or have a peint of Brains (brewed in Cardiff) they also serve Penderyn spirits, maybe they'll have some Brecon gin, can't vouch for it as I'm not a lover of gin.

    Eli & Oce....

Yes, the University is quite beautiful in places, but I was tied up for all working hours so did not make it to the deli.... Must make time next time.

And The Goat Major was mooted at one point but we failed to get there. on the list for next time.

The Angel was fine, a little tired in the rooms themselves but plenty of space and fair fayre for the morn.

Incidentally, I do believe Penderyn may be one of our stakeholders - water purity 'n' all that jazz. Our project is all about Diversity in Upland Rivers (promoting) Ecosystem Service Sustainability - DURESS - see link for more details if interested.

    Cheers both, J

Tis been too long - not been on here in weeks methinks. Have I missed much? All round I mean! Been consumed with domestic duties of unpacking men from college, several nieces communions / confirmations, boxing one man off to NYC for the summer, organising a 1st ever road race along the lake and of course the Windy Stuff! A new twist this week - the planning appeals board have called for a full oral hearing.

BUT I rest awhile - off to Bulgaria with the good lady in the morning for two weeks. And yes never mailed to say IT arrived, the local gazette! (oops will bring it on hols only got a quik scan when it came in near two weeks ago - was very delayed??). Do you feature or is it mainly about an auld boat that used to sail to Kerala?

Cheers Jon - will have the ft hotmail access in Bulg.
