Mountain/Desert/Ocean/Jungle... which one are you?
Ocean probably, but I also love mountains and deserts - the light is fantastic. I've never been to a jungle, mostly because I'm scared of snakes.
What was your first great travel experience?
Volunteering in a South African township. I did three days a week in a school, assisting in the classroom then coaching netball in the afternoons. The other two working days a week I went into a township art studio and learnt printing and modelling from a couple of artists. The studio/shack was the end of a township tour and minibuses full of European and American tourists would come out, humbled by the poverty they'd just witness and there I'd be, sat covered in ink having a cup of tea and bein
What has been your favourite journey?
the Trans-Mongolian Express, or driving up Highway 1
What are your Top 5 places worldwide?
Iceland; Yangshuo, China; San Francisco, USA; the Peak District; trains, anywhere
Recommend a special place to stay
It's neither luxurious nor glamorous, but I've got a soft spot for the Sanlitun Youth hostel in Beijing - it was a really fun place to stay. Also, Buttermere in the Lake District is beautifully rugged.
Which three items do you always pack?
a book, a notebook and pen and my camera
Which passport stamp are you proudest of?
Albania, and all the visas to get the Trans-Mongolian
Which passport stamp would you most like to have?
I'm lacking anything from Central/South America and Antarctica - it'd be nice to have all the continents represented!
Where or what is your guilty travel pleasure?
the North Norfolk coast. It's not glamorous, but I spent all my childhood summers there so it's like being a kid again
Window or aisle?
Aisle so I can walk and stretch, but only if I know the person by the window and they let me look.
