Costa Rica

How long were you there for?
Three nights in August 2012

What was the single highlight of your trip?
Costa Rica is the (colour) greenest country in the world. Wonderful, especially the cloud forest at the top of the road to San Jose through the Braulio Carillo Park which is fascinating - visibility near zero with great broad-leaved trees and ferns lining the road with verdant cliffs.

Any lowlights/cautionary tales?
I have walked through jungle before, but this was the first time I stayed there. Beyond the mosquito netting large green leaves filled the view, closing me in a claustrophobic world, excluding all noise except its own threatening mix of insect chirps and hums. My flesh crept. I hated it!.

Any absolutely MUST see sights/activities?
This was the wildlife part of our trip - wonderful birds, spiders, beetles - for those that like that sort of thing. For me it was the plants that thrilled.

Any absolutely DON'T see sights/activities?
See jungle above.

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
Make time for a few hours in San Jose. It is a quirky city with sudden buildings in morisco or baroque architecture; a very impressive National Theatre in one of whose marbled halls coffee is served; and - when we were there - ladies dancing in the main square to enhance diabetic awareness.
