Where would you go for a one-week active holiday in August?

I have an extra week of holiday that I have not planned yet. I'd like to do something active: cycle, hike or maybe a watersports holiday, but I am totally torn. Taking into account the weather conditions, and the fact that I live in scotland, where would you go for a week at this time of year? I want an adventure! Please help!

Slovenia without a doubt. Triglav/Bled area is just like one big outdoor adventure playground. People are fantastic too!

In 2001 I travelled to Nepal and did a 3 day white water rafting trip down the Kali Gandaki river.   I have always wanted to go back and do the week long version.

You are driven to a starting point and spend the remainder of the week coming all the way back on some of the best rapids in the world, taking your through incredible scenery, tiny villages and you even camp on the sandy beaches - I loved it.  Not sure what the water levels would be like though as I did it in November!

I've not done this, Helen - but it really appeals. What about sea kayaking in the Adriatic Sea. The islands off Croatia look amazing - and I can't think of a better way to see them.
Maybe Dr G could make some recommendations, as I know he does lots of sea kayaking?

The Italian Dolomites are fantastic. A mix of Italian and Germanic cultures as far as food and drink are concerned, think apple strudel with hot chocolate for a mid-morning snack, followed by pizza and red wine. Now to work it off there is fantastic Alpine walking including the Marmolada Glacier trek, there are the Via Ferratas and more technical climbs if you're so inclined and cycling is very popular in the area, though the hills are big. It's a grand spot!

I was going to suggest exploring Holland, Denmark, or Estonia by bike. But looking at your last trip that might not be adventurous enough for you!
You could try kayaking through a Swedish archipelago like Jenny2311 - see here.

I'd definitely recommend Slovenia too - absolutely beautiful, and tons of hiking, kayaking, etc. I went in early June and it was too early to hike on the higher passes. It might be a bit crowded mind.

I'd also recommend the Landmannalaugur to Thorsmork trek in Iceland. Anywhere in Iceland actually. I'm sure it's not as crowded there as in southern Europa.

How about tall ship sailing? I've sailed with a charity called the Jubilee Sailing Trust several times before, and always had a brilliant time. You don't have to know anything about sailing - they teach you everything. You get to take part in everything - setting sails, going on the helm and lookout, helping in the galley. Being on the helm of a huge sailing ship, watching the stars, or the sunset, is just incredible. They have some one-week trips in August, including a Dublin-Greenock trip on the ship Lord Nelson, plus a Southampton-Germany trip on their other ship, Tenacious. Their website is www.jst.org.uk .

Hi Helen, I am in Slovenia at the moment - Lake Bled - and although I am not into activity holidays I have to agree with others who suggest you come here, it really is an active place with cycle tracks and hiking trails all over the Julian Alps, and the people are very friendly too. Bled is very touristy though and I'm sure it will be busy in August, but there are quieter places close by in ski resorts that might suit you better.

    Dear All

Wow! Thanks so much for your great suggestions! Def lots of food for thought .

I have been to slovenia already (about 6 years ago) it was fantastic so I guess no reason not to go back. On a similar balkan-ish theme I was thinking about Macedonia (Lake Ochrid) - has anyone been there???????

Or has anyone been anywhere non-tourist-ghastly on the redsea for snorkelling/diving?

Like the idea of tall ships, kayaking croatia and denmark by bike.

My main problem is I need more holiday!!!!!!!!!

Hmmmm hmmm need to think more.

    Thanks everyone.

Yes, I've been to Lake Ohrid (not Ochrid), getting back a week ago. See my Just Back From for more details and feel free to ask a specific question if you wish.

Bilbo, have you got decent weather yet? I was there a week or so ago and it threw it down most of the time! If you do fancy doing something outdoors orientated 3Glav adventures on the main road is worth popping into.

Hi Nick - weather here is more than decent, in fact too hot really for me to do much at all! In the thirties and very humid with plenty of midges around the lakeside - fortunately they don't appear to bite ;-/
Think we've struck it lucky as it doesn't appear to be so good next week.
