Wanderlust Photo of the Year 2012

Are you entering it this year?

I will be of course trying again this year (Papua New Guinea is definitely on the bucket list) but I won't be submitting until near the end of the competition as I have an upcoming trip to China (and possibly Korea) in September which will hopefully yield some fruitful results.

I expect I will um and ah about it as usual and then be struck by a lack of confidence and declare nothing I have ever taken is good enough, that is how it usually goes.  So you never know.

Angela -- I used to be the same way for many, many years!  Then one year I decided to just try, and one of my photos (the one I thought was the weakest of the lot) was chosen as a finalist (but didn't win anything).  That gave me a big boost of confidence, and I've been submitting every year since (although have never made it to final again yet).

I like this contest because it's based on what I mostly shoot, it protects photographers rights (unlike most photo contests of this nature), and it really forces you to think about what makes a good photograph -- not just to you, but to others as well (well, it does for me anyway).

When's the cut off point for entries? I just looked through the rules and couldn't see a deadline ...
I won't be entering, but I'll be bullying Jamie into submitting again this year (he didn't get anywhere last year, but you gotta keep trying, haven't you?).

By the way, Lyn and the team, when are you going to have an annual writing competition for us wannabe writers?! I bet you'd get a huge response (promise I'll fb and tweet about the comp for you ;-)

    Liz,

It's October 18, 2012.  The information is in the Wanderlust news article, but not in the actual rules and regulations information (I think this was a problem last year as well).

BTW, I think a travel writing competition is a great idea as well!

Cheers, Moose, I thought I was going senile. Perhaps the Towers should put that vital piece of information in the terms ...

See that, Lyn? You've got two entrants already for the writing competition! ;-)

We used to do an annual travel writing comp years ago and it threw up some great writers (eg John Gimlette who has kept his day job but has published several travel books and written articles for Wanderlust and The Telegraph). However, one of the problems with it was that entrants, not surprisingly, wanted feedback on their work - after all, so much work goes into writing an article, eve a short one. It is also a helluva lot of work to judge them, much more
time-consuming than a photo comp. I have memories of being in bed surrounded by boxes of entries!
    Anyway, request noted!

Really? John Gimlette? I'm reading his "Wild Coast" at the moment. I love his style.
I wouldn't worry about offering feedback, Lyn, none of the other travel writing competitions offer it. Hilary Bradt's competition, run in partnership with the Independent, doesn't offer feedback and is tremendously popular (same with the Telegraph, Guardian, BBC Wildlife Magazine Pure/RGS etc).
But I can understand that judging a writing competition must be extremely time consuming, and not for the faint-hearted!
