Train to Sweden - by mistake!

If you watched the excellent Danish / Swedish series 'The Bridge' you will have seen events unfolding on a train on the beautiful Oresund bridge in the climactic last episode. The real mystery, though, is this: How did the entire scene unfold without a ticket inspector in sight?

My twenty-something daughter had her own mini-drama on the the bridge recently. Not that she had intended to be on it at all, but, she tells me, it is very easy to confuse the trains and platfoms Copenhagen Airport station. Instead of getting on a Copenhagen bound train, she and her travelling companion climbed onto a train heading in the opposite direction. “Is this your first time in Sweden?” asked the young
Swedish ticket inspector. “?” was the gist of their reply.

The inspector was unsympathetic and fined them each £80 for the error, despite
the fact that they had legitimate tickets for their intended destination and no intention of cheating anyone of anything. The train manager intervened, cut the fine to one person, and made sure that they got back to Denmark with no further problems, but I guess he felt he had to back up his crew.  Rules are rules.  So be aware, and look carefully at the signs!

Reminds me of the two young travellers a few years ago who thought they'd got a bargain fare to Australia - until they landed in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Commiserations to your daughter, Chris - it's all too easy to get confused at foreign railway stations.

Oh dear. Hope your daughter enjoyed Copenhagen when she eventually got there, albeit €70 lighter.

Am sure I read somewhere about a young Thai lady who thought she'd bought a ticket to Tenerife and ended up in Tel Aviv!

Oh dear. I nearly got into a real pickle a few years ago while Interrailing. Swiss trains are all private, and the passes are sometimes valid on one part of a journey and not another, but you can buy reduced price tickets for some operators and not others. It was utterly confusing. We wanted to catch the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St Moritz, and according to what we knew we had to reserve a seat, but didn't need to pay for a ticket because the train as it sets off from Zermatt is operated by a company that is included. Except apparently they change operator half-way. We were lucky we checked at the station, as it turned out that we could get halfway for free, then get a reduced price ticket for the rest of the trip. If we hadn't checked it we would have each received an (at least) 100 Franc fine when the inspector came round. As it was the inspector had to listen to our explanations in very basic German, and finally gave in and admitted that we had worked the system perfectly. Hurrah for rules!
