    Should tiger tourism be banned?

According to this news item from Wanderlust, India's Supreme Court thinks it should be stopped immediately. What does everyone think? From the article it sounds like a bad call, but is there more to it than that?

Surely this is a retrograde step.  If the Indian Government concentrated more on stopping the poaching of tigers for the abhorent Chinese medicine trade and less on banning tourism it would be better.  I agree with the guy from Exodus.  Obviously too many tourists would not be good but as long as it is controlled to reasonable numbers it can only help the existence of tigers.

It's a terrible call. Local communities (and park rangers) need to benefit financially if they are not to be lured into poaching or turning a blind eye to poaching; more people in an area also means more eyes. I bet if this stands, then the tigers will get wiped out completely. Absolutely astonishing. I wish the Chinese government would do something - we're going to lose all the wild tigers and rhinos in the next few days unless there is a change of attitude in China.

No tourists, no tigers, simple as.

Ajay Dube told the court that critical tiger habitats should be kept safe from all types of human disturbance, including tourism.

I agree with that, but this guy needs a reality pill. Wildlife needs to pay for itself these days, even if it is to exist in a degree of artificiality, which is better than not existing at all.

Without people paying to see the Tigers they don't stand a chance.  The money could be used to help catch the poachers with severe punishment to put others off doing the same.
