    Possible Shetland Visit

I may have a week or so to travel alone while my partner deals with some family matters in early August. One place that has fascinated me for some time is Shetland. I am wondering if August is a good time to go or whether I should leave the visit for June or July another year. My main interests in going are wildlife, history/ archaeology and walking and I would also like to take in some fiddle music or a traditional ceilidh. My concern is whether August is too late for the wildlife - flora and fauna. I am thinking of 2-3 days in Lerwick to include an excursion plus 3 days in Unst, but I am open to other ideas! Also what is the best way to get there from the Manchester area - flying, fly to Aberdeen then boat, or rail/ boat?

    Hi Paul M,

From a wildlife perspective, unfortunately not much!  Puffins and most other seabirds will have left or be leaving.  Waders - resident will be thinking of heading south and northerly nesters from Greenland etc. will not be passing through yet.
Seals and otters will be around and bonxies (great skuas) and Arctic skuas will be around the coasts and moorland areas but, compared with May/June, not a lot happening.
BUT Shetland always seems to get a lot of strange/unusual birds turning up unexpectedly.

Shout if you want more info. Cheers, DrG
