    Lagos, Portugal - any recommendations?

I'm off for a short break on my first trip to Portugal based in Lagos. I'm looking to do as little as possible but does anyone have any tips on places to visit that are "must see" or "must try"?

A trip into the mountains around Monchique is worth doing - lovely and cool with views to the coast. You might like to go to Sagres as well - the most south-westerly point in Europe, about 20 mins drive from Lagos. But from my recollection (this was 10 years ago) Lagos was rather nice to wander around, though we stayed in Carvoeiro a little way along the coast, so only spent a short time there. We took buses to Albufeira too, so you can get around using public transport if you want to venture away from Lagos.

Have a lovely trip, the Algarve is beautiful.

Lagos town has a fair number of interesting sites; the main museum was closed when we were there last year but may have reopened, and don't forget the slave market either, or a walk aroungd the walls and lots else to do. Silves is an old inland town well worth a day trip, but it's not easy by public transport as there is no direct bus and Silves train station is a long walk or a taxi ride from the town - there are buses but not aligned with train arrivals. I personally would not bother with Portimao but it's easily reached by train. Of the towns in the Algarve I have visited, Lagos is definitely my favourite! By the way, don't pronounce it like its Nigerian namesake (named after it by Portuguese explorers) - it's Lagoosh!
