Advice for visiting Petra from Sharmel Sheikh - can it be done in a day? All advice welcome

My friend is staying at Sharmel Sheihk for a week and wants to visit the Dead Sea and Petra for a day. Has anyone any experience of this, is it possible to do in a day. If so, by which mode of transport is it best. Is it safe to hire a car and drive in Jordan - lady and 15 year old daughter?

Oops, I just wrote a long response to this but then the site crashed so here's a short summary - please accept it as such!

    - Petra: wonderful, takes at least two days to see
    - Dead Sea: if you go you need to swim there and be amazed, and have access to fresh water showers afterwards to wash off the salt.  Not worth going just to whizz by it as it's not very pretty
    - Looking at Google, the distance is impossibly far in a day - 1000km plus round trip crossing through two border crossings each way.  Can't comment on the safety.  Driving standards are high and the Jordanians were courteous to us at all times, but we are an older couple.

Save up and visit Jordan separately!  It's worth it.

You can get the ferry from Nuwebia across to Acaba in Jordan - took less than an hour from memory. Petra's a few hours drive from there but the earlier comment was right - it's 5 or 6 miles walk from the Treasury in Petra to the Monastery - it's a HUGE site and not something to be done in an hour or two - but there are plenty of places to stay if you have an extra day and staying overnight would make it quite doable.
