Who won the ‘Disservice to Travel’ gong?
10th February 2010
Wanderlust.co.uk presents the 2010 ‘Disservice to Ttravel’ award to the Met Office for wooly long-range weather predictions
Remember the looming barbecue summer and the resulting ghastly ‘staycation’ trend in 2009? Thousands of otherwise sensible Wanderlusters shivered through one of the wettest UK Julys on record.
You may also recall a prediction for a mild winter, particularly as you shovelled your way through the Big Freeze and Arctic conditions: thousands dreamed once more of the tropics.
Everyone knows that long-range forecasting is a woolly art. So why don’t they keep schtum about it? Perhaps because they like to win awards. So, the Wanderlust 2010 Travel Awards special gong for ‘Disservice to Travel’ goes to; the Met Office!
Stay tuned for summer 2010 predictions. But don’t change your travel plans!
Find out who else was crowned.
How the awards were scored
The altogether legitimate Wanderlust Travel Awards were based on your travels from December 2008 to November 2009.
In most categories, readers were asked to list up to four entries (eg countries visited) and score each one on its merits. The final positions are based on an average score for the entry (converted to a percentage) – so the results are based on satisfaction rather than the number of votes received.
In the other categories (eg top travel personality) we simply counted the number of votes to determine the outcome; and in the newly introduced Special Awards, the winners were elected, wholly undemocratically, by the Wanderlust team.
