3 ways to be a better travel writer and/or photographer

19th June 2012

Always wanted to improve your travel writing or photography and take it to the next level but not sure how? Join Wanderlust on one of three unforgettable trips this Autumn

Wanderlust Journeys works to bring together the creativity and expertise developed over the last 19 years at Wanderlust magazine to deliver leading travel writing, photography and creative holidays for you, aspiring travel writers and photographers.

Have you ever wanted to improve your travel writing and/or photography skills? It couldn't be simpler – Wanderlust Journeys is running three trips this Autumn. Join us to break into travel journalism, improve your skills and potentially feature in Wanderlust magazine and online.

1. Istanbul On Assignment

Learn how to research, write and photograph a major feature for Wanderlust magazine on assignment in Turkey's historical heart.

Our mission on this trip will be to produce a guide to the best of Istanbul for Wanderlust readers. We'll be collaborating on at least one major article for the magazine. Other content and photographs will be showcased on the Wanderlust website, and potentially in our other titles (Unique Honeymoons and Take Better Travel Photos).

For both writers and photographers this trip will be a unique opportunity to understand the disciplines of producing work for publication, and what it is that editors look for.

This trip is designed for people who are already at a good level with their photography or writing. If you’ve entered writing or photography competitions, been on similar courses, or tried to get published, it’s for you. Even if this is your first stab at ‘proper’ travel reporting, you’ll find it rewarding – as long as you bring bags of enthusiasm and energy.

Remember, although there's plenty of fun to be had with the Wanderlust team, this is not a holiday – it's a working assignment.

Take a look at previous attendee Bella Zenesco's experience here (she's now a working professional photographer).

2. Berlin – Travel Writing Workshop

With an eventful history and a cutting edge present, there is a wealth of subjects to inspire your creativity in Berlin. Improve your travel writing on this fun and insightful workshop led by the Wanderlust team and Travellers’ Tales agency.

Explore the city with award-winning writers who will advise and inform – how to break into travel journalism and what editors really look for in articles pitches and features. Helping you to develop your own story ideas the trip's mentors will guide you through the city and aide you.

The trip will also include a constructive critique/feedback session of your work so far – instant improvements will be seen on your trip.

3. Essaouira – Travel Photography Workshop

Improve your photography in magical Essaouira on Morocco's coast. Bustling souks, quiet medina streets, fishing boats, kite-surfers: there is a wealth of colourful material here. You will be mentored throughout by top photographer Paul Harris in a fun and constructive environment. For anyone interested in travel photography, this offers a stimulating weekend that will lift your work to the next level.

The course is suitable for all levels of experience – both beginners and travellers with more photography experience are welcome.

Explore the town while on photographic assignments, undertaking exercises to help you improve your shooting style and photographs. Feedback and critique on location will help you see improvements instantly and workshops in Morocco will also explain how to enter (and potentially win!) photography competitions and how to get published.

Find out more about Essaouira's travel photography workshop here.

All three trips are set to run this Autumn – Wanderlust subscribers save £30 off each trip.
