First vegetarian McDonald's to open in India
7th September 2012
The famous fast food chain is set to open a meat-free version of their famous restaurant in India... So would you eat there?
The vegetarian-friendly outlet will open in June 2013 in Northern India, near the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The restaurant will cater for the large portion of vegetarians in the region and will be the first veg-only version of the meaty outlet.
The Indian population is 40% vegetarian and the growing demand for a meat-free menu urged McDonald's to act.
'It will be the first time we have opened a vegetarian restaurant in the world,' said McDonald's spokesman Rajesh Kumar Maini.
He explained religious reasonings were behind the decision: 'The reasons were very compelling – cow slaughter is not allowed because of religious reasons and we couldn't do pork either.'
McDonald's has a relatively small presence in India and there are currently only 271 outlets from its worldwide total of 33,000.
If the vegetarian restaurant is a success, the model could be moved out into multiple other destinations. Plans are already being put in place for another vegetarian restaurant in north-west India near the Vaishno Devi cave shrine in Kashmir.
So what do you think? Will the big gold M spoil the views of India's iconic Golden Temple? Will the outlet be popular with Indians? Or is it a lure for travellers to the region? Let us know your thoughts below.
