6th February 2009
The winners of the Wanderlust 2008 Travel Photo of the Year competition have been announced today at the Destinations 2009 travel show in London.
Once again the UK’s longest-running amateur travel photo competition drew thousands of entries, with stunning portfolios by professional photographers also showcased.
This year saw the introduction of a new category, Travel Icons, which attracted many thought-provoking images of the world’s best-known travel destinations.
Retired railwayman HR Clayfield’s portfolio of the people of the railway and mining communities in Heilongjiang Province, China, won the Portfolio category.
The runner-up portfolio was Grenville Charles’ ‘Lives of the Kombai people’, a series of shots taken in West Papua, Indonesia
Winner of the Wildlife category was Angus Stead with his image of wildebeest crossing the Mara River in the Masai Mara, Kenya.
David Watts won the Travel Icon category with his unusual perspective on Persepolis, Iran.
Jonathan Clay’s vivid, action-packed ‘Man filming dancers at the Toka Festival, Tanna Island, Vanuatu’ won the People category.
An ethereal, otherworldly picture of Tulips in the Netherlands by Maciej Duczynski won the Landscape category.
“This year’s images were of an exceptionally high standard,” said Lyn Hughes, Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of Wanderlust and competition judge. More than 5,000 entries were received.
