Sydney tops modern wonders poll
8th August 2008
The results of a survey to find the 10 wonders of the modern world have been announced.
Sydney Opera House topped the poll of 2,000 British people, with the Eiffel Tower and Rio’s iconic Christ The Redeemer statue in second and third places respectively.
Interestingly, one of the ‘wonders’, the Palm Islands in Dubai, haven’t even been finished yet. The three luxury palm-shaped resort islands are still being built and won’t be finished for another 10-15 years.
Here’s the full top ten:
1. Sydney Opera House
2. Eiffel Tower, Paris
3. Christ The Redeemer statue, Rio de Janeiro
4. The Palm, Dubai
5. Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
Joint 6. Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur/The Kremlin, Moscow
8. Ground Zero, New York
9. CN Tower, Toronto
10. The Atomium, Brussels
Almost half of the people surveyed by Halifax Travel Insurance said their choice was due to the architecture. 17% said they’d been inspired by seeing their wonder on TV or in a film.
