Spend A Year In Tibet
6th March 2008
The much-anticipated BBC series A Year In Tibet starts tonight on BBC4 at 9pm.
The series follows life in and around Gyantse, the third largest town in Tibet. Gyantse is a hotbed of anti-Chinese feeling in the disputed province.
As well as examining the locals’ attitudes towards the Han Chinese occupation, Chinese journalist and historian Sun Shuyun’s series also takes an intimate look at the life of the local community.
Sun Shuyun has also written a book called A Year In Tibet, which goes on sale on 1 April.
In the book, she describes her encounters with the locals, including a hotelier struggling to attract more tourists and the village shaman worried that the rain cannon will lose him business because the farmers no longer need him to placate the gods. The book also highlights the story of a young girl who doesn’t find out until her wedding day that she is to be married - to two brothers.
We’ve got ten copies of the A Year In Tibet book to give away now, courtesy of publishers HarperCollins.
