Singapore's Gardens by the Bay opens
30th June 2012
Yesterday marked the official opening of one of the world's largest gardens: Gardens by the Bay in Singapore
Occupying the equivalent of 177 football fields, Singapore hopes the new impressive 'superpark' will improve its image as one of the most vibrant cities in the world.
Almost 163,000 plants have been rooted in the gardens, along with 18 'supertrees'; comprising thick-set trunks and towering up to 50 metres high. Those involved with the project say the highlight is a 128-metre long aerial walkway, connecting two of the largest Supertrees, which allows visitors a 22 metre high perspective over the blooming gardens.
But the whole project isn't quite finished; Gardens by the Bay will eventually comprise three gardens transforming the island's Marina Bay into an 'urban outdoor recreation space'. The country is working towards its City in a Garden Vision – aiming to nurture flora and greenery across the island nation.
Gardens of the Bay is open daily from 5am – 2am, entry is free and can be found downtown in Marina Bay. Main attractions, such as the walkway, have a charge and shorter opening hours.
