Rioting in Tunisia overshadows regrowth of tourism
13th June 2012
Recent rioting in Tunisia follows announcements from the tourism industry that travellers are returning to the country post-revolution
A curfew has been declared in several parts of Tunisia, including its capital Tunis, following serious rioting. The news comes a day after the tourism industry announced growth in visitor numbers as the country established stability following the 2010-2011 revolution and subsequent democratisation.
So far 2012 has seen figures rise by 56.5% on last years' visitors during the same period. Tourism from Ireland has risen by a staggering 83% since last year, while British numbers are up by 34%. It is thought the recent civil unrest will spook investors and potential visitors, possibly reversing this boost in tourism and commercial activity.
Wahida Jaiet, UK and Ireland Director for the Tunisian National Tourist Office said earlier this week: “Now is a great time to visit Tunisia as the country enjoys a new-found freedom and optimism. There is plenty to bring visitors back to Tunisia again and again.” However, in light of the riots, carried out by extreme Islamists known as Salafists, it is uncertain whether the destination can maintain its semblance of political stability.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has not issued any travel warnings for Tunisia but visitors should check the official website regularly for updates.
