The designs for the “most advanced polar research vessel in the world” have been unveiled. The aptly-named Aurora Borealis contains a drilling platform for breaking through the ice, a global positioning system and will be able to break ice laterally as well as forwards and backwards. Scientists will also be able to peer out at the frozen world below from two special moon pools below. It’s hoped the vessel will shed much more light on the mysteries of the polar regions. It’s going to be used on Arctic expeditions but can also be used in the Antarctic. To celebrate this arctic achievement, this week’s Wanderweek gallery features photos from both poles as captured on camera by users of our community website goWander.com See this week's gallery here Share your photos with the world at goWander.com
