Hot springs in Yellowstone National Park (BirdofPrey/Steven Robertson)

Opening dates for Yellowstone lodges announced

8th March 2012

The 2012 opening dates for lodges inside Yellowstone National Park have been announced

Yellowstone National Park, the USA's oldest national park, announced the spring opening dates of the lodges within its boundaries this week.

The park's lodges, which are largely shut down over the winter months will reopen in stages over the spring. Access to the park itself will start in late April when the roads leading into Yellowstone are cleared of snow.

Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel will both reopen on 4th May, followed by Lake Yellowstone Hotel and the Old Faithful Lodge. Reservations are being accepted for arrivals after 11th May for these two; the rest of Yellowstone's lodges will reopen in subsequent weeks.

Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872, is located over the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. The park's main geological attraction is the world famous 'Old Faithful' geyser, as well as a collection of other extraordinary geysers and hot springs, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. It is also home to a large variety of wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, bison, and elk.

Spring and early summer are a great time to visit Yellowstone as the wildlife is generally most active at this time of year; newborn bison, elk and even bear cubs can be spotted by beady-eyed visitors.
