North Korea travel ban lifted
17th June 2009
North Korea has announced that it will start issuing visas to UK travellers again. It had stopped allowing Britons into the country last week.
The move appeared to follow a United Nations Security Council meeting, at which tighter sanctions against North Korea were discussed.
“In connection with the recent measures taken by UK government not to allow DPRK citizens to enter the UK, we also will not receive any UK citizens as tourists to the DPRK for the time being,” the state-run Korea International Travel Co reportedly told Beijing-based tour operator Koryo Tours last week.
However, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has confirmed that North Korea is issuing visas again.
North Korea has provoked international condemnation by carrying out a series of nuclear tests.
A few hundred British travellers visit North Korea each year.
