Nine dead in Egypt bus crash
1st May 2008
Nine travellers have died after a bus crash in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, on a road 50 miles south of the city of Suez.
The bus was travelling from Sharm el-Sheikh to Cairo when it reportedly overturned on a bend, hit a concrete barrier and burst into flames. There are reports that the accident was caused by a tyre bursting.
There were 40 people of various nationalities on board the bus, including some British travellers.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office reported that none of the British passengers had been killed but two had been injured.
The coastal road that the bus was travelling along, on the west of the peninsula, has many blind bends.
Over 8,000 people were killed on Egypt’s roads in 2006, mainly due to careless driving, such as overtaking on bends, speeding and poorly maintained roads.
